Turning a would be curse into a gift of inestimable value, the founder of the A.W.A.R.E. system -Barbara Pringle- has used her own "learning disability" as her research base for teaching. The effective learning strategies she developed to earn her university degree in special education have become the foundation for designing the literacy teaching system that has enabled hundreds of "alternate learners" to succeed when the standard education had written them off as "learning disabled." Over thirty years Barb has combined intense analysis of the intricacies of written English with careful observations of how learners of all ages and learning styles process information. On that research base she has evolved the highly effective "PhonKnowLedgy" system. It expedites literacy learning for natural learners and teaches "disabled" learners to process information instead of depending on their unreliable memory.

History of the Academy

The A.W.A.R.E. Academy of Literacy

The A.W.A.R.E. Academy of Literacy was founded in 1992 to provide specialized instruction for disabled learners whose needs were not adequately met by the resources of the school system. Demand for services has now outstripped the resources of the facility, and waiting lists are growing. The outstanding successes achieved by learners who have graduated from the academy have alerted educators in the community to the A.W.A.R.E. system and its potential. As a result, teachers, parents, and even students are asking "why isn't this available in the schools?" Our answer is to convert the program into a virtual teacher "Techi Tutor".
